10 Important Questions to Ask Before Choosing Your Wedding Photographer – A Guide for Brides Planning Their Wedding in Oxfordshire

Planning your special day can seem like a daunting task. There is so much to consider and so much to organise. Wedding venues need to be visited to make sure they are the right fit for your dreams, and the search for your ideal wedding suppliers needs to begin.

One of the most important suppliers you will book is your wedding photographer. After all, once your wedding day has passed, your photographs will be one of the few things you can look back on to relive those special moments.

Choosing the right photographer is about much more than simply finding somebody who can take a good photograph. You need somebody whose style you love, whose personality you feel comfortable with and, importantly, somebody you can trust to capture the memories that will last a lifetime.

As an Oxfordshire Wedding Photographer, I have put together this guide to help you understand what to look for, which questions to ask and what to consider before making your decision. Read more about Oxfordshire Wedding Photography with me HERE.

Whether you are planning a wedding in Oxford, Abingdon-on-Thames, the Oxfordshire countryside or further afield, I hope these ten questions help you find the right photographer for your special day.

1. How much does a wedding photographer cost in Oxfordshire?

The cost of your wedding photographer will be influenced by a number of factors. More experienced wedding photographers will generally charge more, primarily because you are investing in their experience, technical ability and confidence in dealing with the many different situations that can arise throughout a wedding day.

Whilst some people say that "anyone can take a photograph", remember that you are investing in a professional who understands composition (everything included within the photograph), lighting (whether natural light, such as sunlight, or artificial lighting) and the technical aspects of capturing an image.

Mastering these skills takes experience, practice and understanding. It is not simply a case of asking a friend to attend your wedding with a camera or mobile phone.

Every couple is different in terms of what they would like captured. Some couples may only require coverage of their ceremony, whilst others would like their entire wedding day photographed, from the bridal preparations through to the first dance. Naturally, the length of time you require your photographer will influence the price.

Some wedding photographers offer set packages, whilst others charge an hourly rate. Neither approach is necessarily better, but it is important to understand exactly what you are paying for.

There is another important consideration that couples sometimes overlook: what happens after the wedding day?

I remember being asked why I charge what I do for what might appear to be just one day's work. The reality is that photographing your wedding is only one part of the service you receive.

Once your wedding day has finished, all your images need to be downloaded, backed up, reviewed and individually processed using professional editing software to ensure they look their very best. Depending on the number of photographs taken, this can involve many additional hours, sometimes spread over several days.

Before booking your photographer, there are a few additional costs worth checking.

For example, once you receive your online gallery, is downloading your photographs included in the price, or will you be charged for each individual image? A photographer might initially appear to offer a very cost-effective service, only for the final cost to increase considerably when you want to download your photographs.

You should also ask whether wedding albums, physical prints and travel expenses are included or charged separately.

Personally, to keep things simple for my couples, I charge an hourly rate and my quoted price includes travel and access to all the edited digital images within the complete online gallery. Access for family and friends is also included. Physical prints and wedding albums are optional extras. My prices and offers page can be found HERE

My advice is to compare what is actually included rather than simply choosing the cheapest quotation. Your wedding photographs are an investment in memories that you will hopefully treasure for generations.

2. What style of wedding photography should I choose?

Before choosing your photographer, have a think about how you would like your finished photographs to look.

Have you seen a particular style that you like? Perhaps you prefer natural, unposed images, or maybe you love the look of traditional wedding photographs. You might even have a preference for black-and-white photography.

When we talk about photographic style, we are referring to the overall look, feel and approach used to capture your wedding day.

Here are some of the most common styles you will come across:

Documentary or reportage wedding photography

This is all about capturing moments as they happen, without constantly directing or interrupting the natural flow of your wedding day. Think of your photographer as a fly on the wall, quietly documenting the emotions, interactions and little details that make your wedding unique.

Traditional wedding photography

This style includes more formal, arranged photographs. You and your guests will be directed into groups, with everybody looking towards the photographer. These images are particularly useful for capturing family combinations and ensuring you have those important photographs with loved ones.

Editorial and contemporary wedding photography

Editorial photography often takes inspiration from fashion magazines. It can involve more considered composition, creative lighting, dramatic backgrounds and carefully directed poses. The resulting images can have a very polished and stylish appearance.

Romantic wedding photography

This style places an emphasis on emotion, connection and the relationship between the couple. It often includes gently directed poses, beautiful natural surroundings and images that capture the romance of the occasion.

Of course, these styles are not mutually exclusive. Many wedding photographers combine elements of several approaches throughout the day.

For me, whilst I have the ability to adapt to whichever style my couples request, the approach I am most frequently asked to provide is relaxed, natural and unobtrusive wedding photography, with elements of traditional and romantic photography incorporated where appropriate.

Don't be afraid to explore these different styles and discuss your dream photographs with your chosen photographer.

Putting aside the technical ability of your photographer, you also need to feel completely comfortable with the person you choose.

One comment I regularly hear, particularly from the boys, is: "I'm really uncomfortable having my photograph taken!"

Don't worry, I hear this a lot! Usually, after a few hours together, those initial nerves have disappeared, and the boys are completely at ease in front of the camera. Sometimes I struggle to keep them away from the lens!

The bottom line is that it is your photographer's responsibility to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. Your job as a couple is simply to enjoy the moment and allow your photographer to capture those memories.

3. How do I choose the right wedding photographer for my wedding?

As a professional wedding photographer, I have built up a portfolio of work that I am proud to share with prospective couples. It represents many weddings, countless hours of photography and the care I take to ensure I exceed my clients' expectations.

When looking for your ideal wedding photographer, I strongly encourage you to ask to see examples of their previous work.

However, there is something important I would suggest you look for.

Do the photographs tell the story of an entire wedding, showing how the day unfolds and the emotions experienced by the couple and their guests?

Or are you simply being shown a dozen unrelated photographs of different couples and individuals?

A collection of attractive photographs is certainly encouraging, but seeing a complete wedding gallery, or at least a substantial section of one, will give you a much better understanding of what the photographer can deliver throughout an entire wedding day.

When I share my portfolio, I like to show a complete wedding or a substantial section of that wedding. This allows couples to see how I approach everything from the preparations and ceremony through to the celebrations afterwards.

Another important consideration is the experience of previous clients. This can often be established by reading genuine reviews.

Screenshot of Darren Weston Oxfordshire Photographer reviews

Consistently positive reviews can tell you a great deal about the experience other couples have had. At the time of writing this article, I am particularly proud to have received seventy-five five-star reviews.

Whilst five-star reviews are fantastic, don't necessarily be put off by the occasional three- or four-star review. Take the time to understand what happened, how the photographer responded and whether the issue was resolved professionally.

It is also worth remembering that every photographer starts somewhere. When I was building my own wedding photography portfolio, I had to find ways to demonstrate my ability and build trust with couples.

One approach I used was to offer complimentary engagement photoshoots. These allowed couples to spend time with me, get comfortable in front of the camera and see the quality of my work before committing to their wedding photography.

Finally, remember that experience, personality and price all need to be considered together. A less experienced photographer may offer a more affordable option, which could be worth considering if your budget is limited. However, make sure you have seen enough of their work to feel confident in what they can deliver.

4. Should we book an engagement photoshoot before our wedding?

We have already touched on some of the benefits of engagement photoshoots, but they really are worth considering.

Not every wedding photographer offers them, but that doesn't mean you should rule out a photographer who doesn't.

An engagement photoshoot gives you the opportunity to get to know your photographer before the wedding itself. It also helps you become more comfortable in front of the camera, which can make a real difference when your wedding day arrives.

The resulting photographs can also be put to good use. Many couples choose to use their engagement images for save-the-date cards, wedding invitations, wedding websites or announcements to friends and family.

Some photographers offer engagement sessions as a complimentary addition to their all-day wedding packages, whilst others offer them at a reduced rate when booked separately.

For my couples, I include a complimentary set of engagement photographs with my all-day wedding packages. I see this as a great opportunity for us to spend some time together before the big day and for you to become familiar with my approach to photography. See some of my engagement shoots HERE.

If you decide not to have an engagement photoshoot, don't worry. An experienced wedding photographer will know how to help you feel relaxed and comfortable from the moment they arrive.

5. How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?

This is a useful question because many couples underestimate how quickly their wedding day passes. However, perhaps a more realistic question is: how many hours of photography can we comfortably afford within our wedding budget?

To help you understand how much coverage you might need, it is useful to think of your wedding day in three main stages.

1. Wedding preparations

This is where the bride and groom are generally getting ready separately.

The bride and her bridal party might be having their hair and makeup done, enjoying a glass of something bubbly and sharing those final moments before the ceremony.

Meanwhile, the groom and his groomsmen will be getting dressed, preparing for the day and making their way to the ceremony venue.

These preparations can take several hours, and there are some lovely opportunities to capture the anticipation, excitement and emotion before the ceremony begins.

2. The wedding ceremony

This is the main event, where you officially become married in front of your family and friends.

The ceremony itself might last anywhere from around twenty minutes to over an hour, depending on whether you are having a civil ceremony, a religious service or another type of celebration.

Following the ceremony, there are usually confetti photographs, congratulations from guests and opportunities for those all-important family group photographs.

3. Post-ceremony celebrations

This is generally when you can relax, take a deep breath and reflect on the morning's events whilst spending time with your guests.

It is also when many of the most natural and unobtrusive photographs are captured. Guests are mingling, catching up with family and friends, enjoying the surroundings and celebrating together.

Before the wedding breakfast, this is often the ideal opportunity to arrange your formal family group photographs and spend a little time together having your couple portraits taken.

So, how much coverage should you book?

If your budget is tight, I would generally suggest prioritising professional photography of the ceremony and post-ceremony celebrations. These are important parts of your wedding story and will give you a wonderful collection of memories.

Another consideration is the number of guests attending.

A larger wedding might consist of 200 or more guests. At larger celebrations, I always try to capture as many of the guests as possible, including those who might not appear in the formal group photographs. Naturally, this takes additional time and planning.

In contrast, smaller weddings with just a handful of guests may not require several hours of photography.

Finally, remember that wedding schedules can sometimes slip. Small delays can occur throughout the day, so having a realistic timeline and knowing which family groups you would like photographed can make a huge difference.

I often encourage the groomsmen or a nominated family member to help gather guests together before they are needed for the formal photographs. This keeps things moving and ensures you spend less time organising people and more time enjoying your wedding. 6. What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

Sadly, here in the UK, the seasons are more of a guideline when it comes to predicting wedding weather! Having a Plan B is always sensible.

The good news is that professional wedding photographers can often embrace the rain and use it to create some rather beautiful and atmospheric images, provided the couple are happy to venture outside.

Rain can create reflections, dramatic skies and opportunities for some wonderfully romantic photographs. Even a few minutes outside with an umbrella can produce something quite special.

For couples who would prefer to stay dry, your photographer should have a good understanding of how to work with the venue's indoor spaces should planned outdoor celebrations need to move inside.

Natural window light, staircases, covered areas and attractive architectural features can all provide excellent photographic opportunities.

As an Oxfordshire Wedding Photographer, I have experienced weddings in all sorts of weather conditions and at venues throughout the county. Being able to think on your feet, adapt to changing circumstances and reassure your couples is an important part of the job.

Just because it rains on your wedding day doesn't mean you cannot have the beautiful photographs you hoped for.

7. How many photographs will we receive, and how long will they take to arrive?

There is no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to the exact number of photographs you should receive. This will largely depend on how many hours your wedding photographer is with you, the number of guests, the activities taking place and the photographer's individual approach.

As a general guide, a photographer covering a ten- to twelve-hour wedding day might deliver somewhere in the region of 600 to 900 carefully selected and edited photographs. However, this is only an indication, not a guaranteed number.

Having photographed weddings for a number of years, I prefer to give my couples a generous collection of images so they can enjoy the story of their day and choose their own personal favourites.

It is also worth asking how your finished photographs will be delivered.

Historically, wedding photographers often supplied digital images on USB sticks, sometimes presented in beautiful gift boxes. Whilst this can still be a nice option, technology moves quickly and physical storage formats can become outdated.

To address this, I provide my couples with secure access to a private online viewing gallery. This can be accessed from almost any internet-connected device.

Within the gallery, you can view your photographs as a slideshow, browse through the individual images and open your favourites to enjoy them in a larger format.

Physical prints can also be ordered directly through the gallery. Family and friends can have their own access to view and enjoy the photographs too, with gallery permissions and settings managed according to your preferences.

Turnaround time is another important question to ask before booking.

Personally, I believe couples should be able to enjoy their wedding photographs as soon as reasonably possible. After all, you have spent months planning your wedding and it is lovely to be able to relive those special memories whilst the excitement is still fresh.

Some couples also prefer to ask guests not to post their own photographs on social media until they have received their official wedding gallery. This is entirely a personal choice, but it can make the first viewing of your professional photographs even more special.

As a guideline, I aim to deliver my couples' edited wedding galleries within five to seven days of their wedding.

8. Should we have a second photographer at our wedding?

Before answering this question, it is worth understanding what an additional photographer can bring to your wedding.

Out of the hundreds of weddings I have photographed, fewer than ten per cent have involved a second photographer. This is not to say that having two photographers isn't beneficial, but it isn't always necessary.

It is also important not to confuse a second photographer with a videographer. A second photographer is there to capture additional still photographs, whereas a videographer concentrates on recording moving images and creating a wedding film.

So, what are the advantages of having two photographers?

A second photographer can position themselves elsewhere, using different camera angles and lenses to capture alternative viewpoints of the same moments.

For example, whilst one photographer concentrates on the bride walking down the aisle, the second might capture the groom's reaction or the expressions of family members watching the ceremony.

One definite advantage is when the bride and groom are getting ready at completely different locations. Having two photographers means both preparations can be covered without one photographer having to rush between venues.

A second photographer can also be useful at larger weddings where there are many guests, several locations or multiple things happening at the same time.

Of course, additional photography comes at an extra cost.

As we have already discussed, wedding budgets need to be considered carefully. To reassure you, a well-planned wedding can be beautifully documented by one experienced professional photographer.

My advice is to discuss your guest numbers, venue arrangements and expectations with your photographer before deciding whether a second photographer is necessary.

9. Have you photographed at our wedding venue before?

Let me tell you, photographing a wedding at a venue I already know definitely has its advantages!

Even something as simple as navigating a large wedding venue can be challenging, especially when you are carrying camera equipment and need to be in the right place at the right time.

I am fortunate to be a preferred supplier at some of my local wedding venues, including The Cosener's House in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, and Stonehill Barn in Abingdon. Being a preferred supplier generally means that the venue knows my work and feels confident recommending my services to couples who are considering booking their celebrations there.

Having photographed numerous weddings at The Cosener's House, I have become familiar with its beautiful surroundings, gardens and photographic opportunities throughout the different seasons.

From the historic architecture and Abbey Meadows to the gardens overlooking the River Thames, there are some wonderful locations for romantic wedding photographs.

However, what if your chosen photographer hasn't worked at your venue before?

Don't let that put you off. An experienced photographer should be more than capable of preparing for an unfamiliar location.

Personally, I like to research a venue in advance, review its layout and identify potential photographic locations. If possible, I will also arrange to arrive early so I can familiarise myself with the surroundings before your guests arrive.

It is also worth discussing any particular photographs you have seen online and would love to recreate. Your photographer can then consider how best to achieve a similar result whilst still making the images personal to you.

Whether you are getting married at a historic Oxfordshire venue, a countryside barn or a beautiful location in Oxford city, experience, preparation and flexibility are what really matter.

10. What happens if something goes wrong on the wedding day?

Things don't always go according to plan. That is simply life sometimes!

However, as a professional wedding supplier, it is my responsibility to control everything I can to minimise the chances of something going wrong and to be prepared should the unexpected happen.

I am also proud to be part of a wedding supplier group called Wonderful Oxfordshire Weddings. This is a collection of like-minded local wedding professionals who work together to help couples plan and enjoy their special day.

The Wonderful Oxfordshire Wedding Logo and email address

Through this group, I have had the pleasure of working alongside many talented suppliers at venues throughout Oxfordshire. Because we share a common goal of delivering an excellent experience for our couples, we understand the importance of communication, teamwork and supporting one another when plans need to change.

As a photographer, I also make sure I carry backup equipment in the unlikely event that something malfunctions.

This includes backup cameras, lenses, batteries, lighting equipment, memory cards and other essential accessories.

It is also important to ask your photographer what arrangements they have in place should they become ill or be unable to attend your wedding. You should also check that they have appropriate insurance and understand how your photographs will be backed up and protected after the event.

These are not necessarily the most exciting questions to ask when planning your wedding, but they are important ones.

Ultimately, it is about demonstrating professionalism, reliability and experience.

Brides and grooms aren't simply booking somebody with a camera; they are trusting somebody to capture memories that cannot be recreated.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Photography…

When should I book my Oxfordshire wedding photographer?

I would always recommend booking your wedding photographer as soon as you have secured your wedding venue and confirmed your date. Popular wedding photographers in Oxfordshire can get booked up well in advance, particularly for summer Saturdays. Ideally, start researching photographers 12–18 months before your wedding, although it is always worth enquiring if your wedding is sooner.

Do wedding photographers need a contract?

Absolutely. A professional wedding photographer should provide a written agreement outlining what you are booking and what you can expect. This should include the agreed coverage, fees, payment arrangements, cancellation terms, image delivery and any other important conditions. It protects both you and your photographer and ensures everybody understands what has been agreed.

Can we request a mixture of colour and black-and-white wedding photographs?

Of course! Many couples love having a mixture of colour and black-and-white photographs. Certain moments can look particularly striking in black and white, especially emotional expressions, intimate moments and timeless portraits. Discuss your preferences with your photographer before the wedding so they understand the look you would like to achieve.

Will our wedding photographer visit the venue beforehand?

This really depends on the photographer and the venue. Some photographers prefer to visit beforehand, whilst others are comfortable researching the venue and arriving early on the wedding day. Personally, if I am photographing a venue for the first time, I like to familiarise myself with its layout and identify potential photographic locations in advance. It is all about being prepared.

Can we have drone photography at our wedding?

Drone photography can provide some spectacular additional perspectives, particularly at beautiful countryside wedding venues throughout Oxfordshire. Aerial photographs can capture the venue, surrounding landscape and the scale of your celebrations in a way that traditional photography cannot. However, drone use is subject to weather conditions, airspace restrictions, venue permission and aviation regulations. Always check that your photographer has the appropriate qualifications, permissions and insurance. I love being able to use my drone at my weddings - it always adds a truly unique perspective to the wedding gallery or album.

Final Thoughts – Finding the Right Oxfordshire Wedding Photographer

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your special day.

Your wedding photographs will become a lasting reminder of the people, emotions and little moments that made your celebration unique. Long after the flowers have faded and the wedding cake has been enjoyed, these images will allow you to look back and relive those memories.

Take your time, look through complete wedding galleries, read reviews and, most importantly, arrange a conversation with the photographers you are considering.

Make sure you feel comfortable with their personality, understand exactly what is included in their prices and have confidence in their ability to capture your day.
